N. alata (Banaue)

Description: A common species endemic to the Philippines. Both highland and lowland varieties occur. Plants can be found growing naturally in secondary forest, roadbanks, and scrub vegetation. Pitchers, usually averaging 3-5" in length, are typically bulbous in the lower half and cylindrical above.

Cultivation recommendations: The highland varieties make excellent beginner's plants due to their exceptional vigour and ease of cultivation. They tolerate low humidity well and may be grown in a warm or cool greenhouse or sunny windowsill. The lowland varieties are also fast-growing but require considerably more warmth and humidity and prefer a somewhat drier compost. See also: How to Grow Nepenthes
